Apart from lights, sweets, merriment – the festival of Diwali is widely associated with money. The very first day of the 5-day festival is named Dhanteras meaning the day of money. And nobody fails worshipping Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth on Laxmi Puja. So Diwali makes us speak about money in movies. We analyze which films were the biggest grossers of the year and raked in the maximum moolah. Hello Here the Top Bollywood Films (Grosses) of 2008 1. Jodha Akbar Ashutosh Gowariker's magnanimous period drama Jodhaa Akbar was the first hit of the year, in fact a blockbuster. The grand canvas at which the film, budgeted at Rs 40 crores was mounted, showed in every frame of the film. Despite all the controversy surrounding its historical recreation, the film faired extremely well in the domestic market and won a super-hit tag in the overseas territory. The film got an advantage of consecutive maiden weeks with no release in its following 3 weeks of release. The release was planned accordingly and also other mediums to small films tried to keep safe distance from this mammoth movie.
Jodhaa Akbar featured amongst the Top 5 Hindi film earners of all time in the Middle East and the highest non SRK starrer in the UK after Dhoom 2, two years ago. 2. Race The second hit came close to the end of the quarter in the form of Abbas-Mustan's Race. A multi star-studded cast and a slick look worked over the trademark Abbas-Mustan thrill tricks. Race raked in Rs. 70 crores at the box-office in just 10 days in India, making it the 2nd highest opening week of all time. Internationally too, Race grossed a box office of 20 crores, taking its 10 day box-office figures to Rs 90 crores worldwide. 3. Sarkar Raj
Post the disastrous debacle of Aag, Ram Gopal Varma resurrected his credibility as an accomplished filmmaker with Sarkar Raj. A cast comprising the Bachchan trio (Amitabh-Abhishek-Aishwarya) and a sequel to Sarkar were strong enough reasons to generate curiosity value for the film and fetched in a decent audience. With its pro-Maharashta theme, the film won a hit status in Maharashtra along with some south territories. The business in other areas was decent enough to gain a semi-hit tag and the film was an overall profit maker. 4. Jannat Bhatt camp’s Jannat was a surprise packet of the year and the only film that worked while the IPL craze had hit the nation. Jannat also happened to be Emraan Hashmi’s biggest overseas grosser whereby he hiked his fees from Rs 1.5 crores to Rs 5 crores. While he backed out from a Warner Bros project due to monetary reasons, Percept signed him for a 3-film deal at Rs 15 crores. 5. Singh is Kinng
With a widespread marketing program designed for the film, Singh is Kinng opened to packed houses and continued Akshay Kumar’s success story at the box-office. While the business was mind-blowing in the Northern territories thanks to the Punjabi factor in the film, Singh is Kinng also raked in good money from the international market. With Katrina Kaif giving company, Anees Bazmee’s comic touch and Pritam’s chartbusting music, the film did good business. 6. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na They say when it’s Aamir Khan, you are bound to get a hit. Even people who are not much into films would blindly say that Aamir does very few films but they all are hits. Though he wasn’t in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Aamir was the producer of the film and this time was more concerned with the monetary gains of the film. Nephew Imran Khan’s debut was a unanimous hit gaining positive reviews throughout and doing extremely good business for a moderately budgeted film. 7. Rock On Farhan Akhtar’s debut as an actor instantly clicked at the box-office. The simple but convincing direction, rocking musical score and great performances by the cast worked in the film’s favour and Rock On got audiences to the theatres for several weeks, which is an achievement in today’s times. 8. A Wednesday UTV’s low budget film A Wednesday had no star-value as its selling point. But a brilliant script, intelligent storytelling and superlative performances appealed to the audiences to such an extent that it’s playing in theatres even today. Despite its terrorist and thriller theme, family audiences showed inclination towards the film for an extremely positive word-of-mouth that had spread about the film. And with its shoe-string budget, the film gained decent money to be tagged as a HIT. 9. Welcome to Sajjanpur UTV’s attempt to serve something different to the audiences worked with the audiences in 2008. Every film from their stable was different from the cliched Bollywood potboilers and the creativity worked in its merit. Shyam Benegal’s Welcome to Sajjanpur was one such film which through its simple storytelling, decent performances and a rustic village feel entertained the audiences. UTV bagged another HIT under its belt. 10. 1920 Vikram Bhatt who had not tasted success for quite some time (read years) took a risk with a new starcast and less tried genre of horror. But with a decent direction and good performance by Adah Sharma, 1920 clicked at the box-office and gave Vikram his first hit post Raaz, which again was a horror film. 11. Bachna Ae Haseeno
Yash Raj Films were into a slump with repeated flops since the past 2 years. Except for Chak De India, none of their films worked at the box-office. They needed a hit badly and Bachna Ae Haseeno came as a breather. Though not a superhit material, Ranbir Kapoor’s charm worked on the audience as it did on the 3 leading ladies of the film – Bipasha Basu, Minissha and Deepika Padukone. With Roadside Romeo, hope the situation only gets better. And Fashion, Ghajini, Rab ne banaya Jodi need to see in future.
