Top Ten 007 Movies

.

In preparation for the release of the 22nd "Official" Bond film Quantum of Solace, I decided to watch the entire series in order. It turned out to be a much bigger challenge than I anticipated. After all, if you wanted to prepare for, say, the new Indiana Jones movie, you could do it in a single day. Not so with the longest running franchise in movie history. Still, I accomplished my goal, ending with an opening night screening of Quantum of Solace earlier this evening.

My two cents? I enjoyed it. It's wall-to-wall action that is always exciting, if not always worthy of what I like to call the "WOW" factor. I was hoping for a little more "spy stuff," like the terrific scene in which 007 invades a meeting of Quantum (the new SPECTRE) and IDs a couple of its members.

Daniel Craig is terrific again and there are some good references to previous films; most notably a tribute to the famous scene in Goldfinger. I also liked the opening credits sequence and the song performed by Jack White and Alicia Keys.

It just missed making my top ten list, but by no means do I expect Bond fans to be disappointed by 007's 22nd effort.

10. Live and Let Die (1973)

A couple of fantastic chase scenes (the best being the boat chase through the bayou) rise this film above its cheesier moments (Yaphet Kotto exploding like a balloon?). Oh, and there's that fantastic Paul McCartney theme song; the first Bond song to get nominated for an Oscar.

9. Octopussy (1983)

Sure, Bond in a clown suit is just one of many goofy flourishes to this film, but the final forty minutes or so of action is maybe the most exciting of any of the Roger Moore films.

8. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

The plot of a media mogul creating an international incident in order to improve his ratings seems even more topical today than it was 11 years ago. And the action scenes are fantastic.

7. License to Kill (1989)

By feeding Felix to the sharks, License to Kill raised to stakes higher than any Bond film since On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The plot is great with Bond going rogue and that final tanker chase scene is a lot of fun.

6. Thunderball (1965)

In a series filled with beautiful women, Thunderball may have the two sexiest. It's also got an intriguing storyline and an underwater action sequence that may look kind of cheesy today, but is still a feat of staging.

5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

The movie that dared to go where no Bond movie dared to go before: 007's Wedding. The film also has the most downbeat ending of any Bond film, making it the Empire Strikes Back of the series. Lazenby is good in his only outing as 007.

4. Goldfinger (1964)

It's the Bond film generally considered to be the best; at least until Casino Royale came along. That's no surprise as it has got one of the best villains (Auric Goldfinger), one of the best henchmen (Oddjob) and one of the best Bond girls (Pussy Galore, "I must be dreaming"). It's also perhaps the most quotable of all the Bond movies. One-liners galore.

3. Casino Royale (2006)

It's amazing that this 21st film in the Bond series can make it all seem fresh again as Bond enters the modern era of action movie. Daniel Craig puts all his critics to rest and instantly ranks with Connery and Brosnan among the best Bonds.

2. Goldeneye (1995)

I had seen bits and pieces of Bond on T.V. growing up, but being the first Bond film I saw in theaters, Goldeneye was really my introduction to the series. It's a great debut for Brosnan and includes one of my favorite chase scenes in the series (the tank chase). Although I've now seen every film in the series at least twice, when I think of James Bond, Goldeneye is still my reference point.

1. From Russia with Love (1963)

It's not technically the first Bond film, but it seems to set the formula the rest of the series would follow. It's the first Bond film to feature an action scene prior to the opening credits; it's the first to feature a theme song inspired by its title; and it is the movie that introduces Desmond Llewelyn as Q. It also has the first great evil henchman with Robert Shaw's Grant. Although it was only the second film in my Bond marathon, none of the 20 films I watched after it could knock it out of my #1 spot.

Note to the producers: I would like to recommend director Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale) be given back the reigns for the next Bond film? He seems to have this thing figured out.

For the record:

11. Quantum of Solace
12. The Spy Who Loved Me
13. The Man with the Golden Gun
14. The World is not Enough
15. The Living Daylights
16. For Your Eyes Only
17. Diamonds are Forever
18. Dr. No
19. Die Another Day
20. You Only Live Twice
21. A View to a Kill
22. Moonraker
